Philosophy as Total Axiomatics: Serious Metaphysics, Scrutability Bases, and Aesthetic Evaluation

چکیده
What is the aim of philosophy? There may be too many philosophical branches, traditions, practices, and programs to admit of a single overarching aim. Here, I focus on a fairly traditional philosophical project that has recently received increasingly sophisticated articulation, especially by Frank Jackson (1998) and David Chalmers (2012). In Section 1, I present the project and suggest that it is usefully thought of as ‘total axiomatics’: the project of attempting to axiomatize the total theory of the world. In Section 2, I raise a problem for the project that I call the ‘problem of multiple axiomatizations’. I consider some initially alluring but ultimately unpromising approaches to this problem in Section 3. In Section 4, I defend a surprising approach to the problem, according to which competing axiomatizations of the total theory of the world are effectively evaluated for their

On Nelson’s Position Concerning the Philosophy of Mathematics (1928)
Subsequent to the preceding article by Otto Meyerhof some words on Nelson’s significance for the philosophy of mathematics should be said. Nelson belonged to those philosophers whose way of thinking resulted from a familiarity with the spirit of exact sciences. For him, mathematics and theoretical physics formed the model he tried to follow in elaborating his philosophical thoughts. He found th...
متن کاملThe Influence of Ibn Sìnå on Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and His Followers
This article is an investigation into the nature of the Sufi metaphysics of Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and his followers. In contrast to previous scholars, who have considered Qinawì to be dismissive of philosophy in a way similar to Ghazålì, the author shows that in fact philosophical metaphysics, and in particular the formulations of Ibn Sìnå, had a great impact on Qinawì and his followers in the sch...

Questions about time have long been among the most discussed and most perplexing questions in metaphysics. What is the nature of time? Is change a necessary feature of time? Is the passage of time from past to future an illusion? As long as these questions have been asked, they have been at the center of major debates not only within philosophy but also at its boundaries. Disputes about topics ...

متن کاملPropositions and the Metaphysics of Time
The central point of Brogaard's interesting essay is that temporalism, roughly, the thesis that there are propositions whose evaluation is sensitive to time (14), is a better alternative to standard semantic eter-nalism, roughly, the thesis that no proposition is sensitive to temporal variation. Five theoretical roles individuate propositions: (i) semantic values of sentences, (ii) objects of a...
